Accreditation Canada developed the Independent Medical/Surgical Facilities Standards to meet the needs of non-hospital surgical facilities across Canada. Pilot testing and national standards consultation took place in fall 2010, and the standards were released in early 2011.
Why were the Independent Medical/Surgical Facilities Standards developed?
Accreditation Canada has been following relevant developments and investigating this sector since 2005. After receiving several requests to develop customized standards for organizations that perform surgery outside of a hospital. Accreditation Canada decided to review how the Qmentum accreditation program could meet the needs of this specific sector.
A national advisory committee of experts from the field guided the development of the Independent Medical/Surgical Facilities Standards.
Where will the standards be used?
The standards will be used in non-hospital facilities where invasive or operative procedures, such as plastic surgery, are performed. Given the various kinds of surgery offered by potential client organizations, the standards will take into account the different levels of sedation used and the types of surgical procedures.
What is the content of the standards?
The standards address key areas of quality and safety:
• Building an effective facility
• Maintaining a safe facility
• Having the right people work together to deliver services
• Coordinating and delivering services
• Maintaining accessible and efficient health information systems
• Monitoring quality and achieving positive outcomes
