Accreditation Canada's Standards for Managing Medications address the safe use and effective management of medication, and are to be used by organizations with or without an on-site pharmacy. The standards emphasize a collaborative approach to prevent and reduce adverse drug events (ADEs) by addressing all aspects of a medication use process, from selection and preparation to administration of the medication and ongoing monitoring of clients.

Some of the following standards and criteria were adopted with permission from the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) and ISMP Canada, based on the ISMP Medication Safety Self-Assessment ® -Canadian Version.

This standard section covers the following subsections:

    • Working together to promote medication safety

    • Properly labelling and storing medications
    • Appropriately ordering and transcribing medications
    • Accurately preparing and dispensing medications
